Privacy Policy – Netan

SUMMARY

Netan has no user account, no backend of its own and no advertising or analytics SDKs. The home network test never leaves your network. The internet test sends measurement data to M-Lab, where this data is published publicly.

HOME NETWORK TEST

For the home network test, the app announces itself on the local network via Bonjour and transfers random data between two devices. This data is generated in memory and discarded immediately – it is neither stored nor analyzed.

The information visible in the process (device name, local IP address, port) stays on the local network. Nothing is transmitted to the internet. That's why iOS asks for the “Local Network” permission on first launch; without it, this test doesn't work.

INTERNET TEST (M-LAB NDT7)

The internet test uses the measurement platform of Measurement Lab (M-Lab). Please read this section before your first measurement.

M-Lab publishes ALL measurements performed via NDT as open data under the CC0 license (public domain). Published data includes the time, throughput, latency, TCP metrics and your IP address. M-Lab does not truncate IP addresses in the published datasets.

There is NO per-user opt-out for this test: whoever starts the measurement publishes the result. If you don't want that, don't run the internet test – the home network test is unaffected and keeps working.

TOOLS

Ping, Traceroute and Wake-on-LAN only send packets to the addresses you enter yourself. The IP scan only checks addresses on your own local network; the results stay on the device and are not transmitted. Saved Wake-on-LAN devices are stored only locally on the device.

For “Public IP”, the app calls the free service ipify.org. Like any web server, it sees your public IP address and returns it. According to ipify, it does not store any visitor data: ipify.org

The DNS lookup sends the entered name directly to the selected DNS server (your router, Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google 8.8.8.8 or Quad9 9.9.9.9). This server sees your IP address and the queried name. The port scan and the Bonjour browser only work on the local network or with the address you enter yourself.

WHAT STAYS ON THE DEVICE

The measurement history (time, speeds, latencies, device name and address of the peer, assigned locations) is stored exclusively locally on your device. A CSV or PDF export is only created at your command and goes wherever you share it. It is not transmitted and can be completely deleted in the history at any time. Deleting the app removes it as well.

SUBSCRIPTIONS AND PURCHASES

Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store. Netan does not receive any payment or account data, only the information whether a subscription is active. Apple’s privacy policy applies to the processing of purchases.

TRACKING

The app contains no third-party analytics, advertising or crash-reporting SDKs. No tracking takes place within the meaning of the App Tracking Transparency framework.
